This thing always fascinated me, it just seems so odd. Were the verandas part of the conversion to departmental use or original? And does anyone know what the white fixings are to the end doors? They look to big for hinges and I was wondering if they may be some sort of measuring device.

The white end fixings supported an internal central roof height girder that slides out with a manual chain hoist attached to allow heavy objects to be lifted to and from track level,

converted from a period3 LMS third open m9347m so possibly side passenger doors at each end removed and roof cut back ?

The quoted scrapping date of 3/89 is clearly incorrect, this more likely being the date it was despatched to Long Marston. The July 1990 pictures are I believe taken on the connecting line between the Exchange Sidings and Bird yard where it could still be found in April 1991. As such, if you didn't know it was there easily missed on a visit to the Exchange Sidings or Bird Yard.

DM395924 was delivered to Long Marston on 18/01/1989 and abandoned on the access link to the Bird Group scrapyard due to the state of the track. RCTS RO 12/92 p572
