    This coach was previously a Bulleid-designed 2-HAL unit, number S 10764 in set 2646.

A great pity that no 2-HAL unit was saved for preservation, but not this particular coach for obvious reasons.

with the various units and stock saved around the country - the southern electric story and its innovations, advances will live long in the history of British railway vehicle constructruction iand its contribution to the worlds railway network.

we can be assured that a mk3 will be saved maybe one of the prototypes that is still in service.

it is however impossible to save one of everything, unless there was a second museum site, WOLVERTON would be perfect for this !!

"A second museum site" - ? - If you mean National Railway Museum sites - I'm pretty sure that there already are two sites ;)

Surely a museum site for 3rd rail stock should be on the 3rd rail network - Eastleigh for example, or Ardingly.

Slight problem - can't have operational live 3rd rail on a preserved railway. EMUs would have to be loco hauled or as they do in USA, coupled to a generator/battery wagon.

I think this argument is getting confused between a third site for a national railway museum and a 3rd rail (electric) site for an operational railway?!

    Continuing Martin Allen's message . . .

2HAL 2646 was disbanded in 1948 with its motor coach, 10764, reformed in 4LAV 2926 which had one of its motor coaches scrapped following an accident at South Croydon 24/10/47 (info off SEG site).
