    18 April 2005 - Paul Cheesemore

Is this visible from anywhere as I require this?

Yes its visible from the A40 into London - on the left as you cross over the Tube lines on the approach to Gipsy Corner.

This shell is still in place, I noted it yesterday. As well as the A40 it can be seen from Central Line trains travelling to and from Ealing Broadway.

Bloody Hell! It's still there! I used to see that thing every day for several years when I used to commute to LU Ealing Common Depot! In my 32 years on the Underground, it always looked like that!

  • DS 70220

    15 March 2007 - Ben Williams

... and not completely forgotten as there is a plan to remove it at some point soon! How exactly this will happen is another matter......

Apparently located in the Western Trading Estate Siding. What ever serves/served.

    17 February 2008 - Ben Williams

The burnt-out frame of this van still remains to this day in the bushes at North Acton Jcn!

    19 February 2008 - Jon Horswell

It is amazing to think that the frame has lasted this long. It has clearly been forgotten about as it serves no purpose whatsover. Though it doesn't look so much of an eyesore as it blends in with the foliage so well as to be overlooked entirely. Good to see a picture of what it once looked like!

Had another look at this today - I think the siding it is sat on has been disconnected but it is adjacent to the sidings into the Park Royal Tarmac depot (not sure if trains still serve this these days but the sidings still run into the yard.) If anyone was keen enough to try and get it out I think it would have to be jacked up and shifted across to the Tarmac depot. Only good for underframe though of course - if that!

I think this may now have gone. Tried my best to look out of a packed Central Line train but didnt seem to get a visual. Can anyone confirm?

    28 October 2010 - Ben Williams

I'll try to check some point soon - its easier to see from the A40 (and in winter!)

Can confirm this is still in its location, seen 14/11/10, photo here:

I dont think it can be seen from Central Line trains to Ealing Broadway, as they dip down to go under the A40 and turn away from it, but might be able to from trains to West Ruislip? Having had a search for it by tube before, it's certainly much easier to see from stood on the footpath of the A40!

  • DS 70220

    15 November 2010 - Jon Horswell

That seals it then. I realise now by reading your comment that it cannot be viewed from the Ealing Broadway branch of the Central Line. Thats why I couldn't see it. I have seen it from the tube before so it must be visible, albiet briefly, from the West Ruislip branch. Thanks.

Further to earlier deliberations, this vehicle is perhaps most easily viewed from the ex GC/GW joint line from Old Oak Common to South Riuslip. Passed recently on one of Chiltern Railways diverted trains that were running all week into Paddington.

There is also one train a week that leaves Paddington bound for High Wycombe that can be taken. It leaves Padd at 11:35 but not sure if this is everyday.

  • 16 December 2011 - David Warby

I am pleased to report that this vehicle is still in situ. I viewed it from Chiltern Train's 1V28 10:44 Gerrards Cross to Paddington. The backworking to this train is 2M24 11:36 Paddington to Gerrards Cross. After a few other moves, I positioned myself on the Central Line service from West Ruislip, but as we approached North Acton Jn, the tube does indeed dip down, and DS70220 did not appear to be visible. Incidentally, the adjacent sidings were still in use with a class 66 shunting.

  • 9 March 2014 - jarrod barker

the remains of this van are still in situ. Went past it twice this last week.

  • 13 August 2014 - Greg Hartle

After quite a hefty trek from Willesden Jcn station, I finally got to view the remains of this vehicle for the first (and probably the only) time from the A40.Many thanks to this website for guiding me to the only adequate vantage point.A strange place to get a 'cop' but hey, it was worth the walk...

  • 30 January 2015 - TONY MASON

I saw the remains of this vehicle on 28th January 2015.

It is about a 10minute walk from North Acton station on the Central Line

Just passed here by car and I can't be 100% sure but I think it may have now gone? Anyone seen it recently?

  • 25 March 2017 - Simon Bendall

Posting on wnxx forum reports this still present on 24 March 2017.

  • 22 August 2018 - David Shaw

Can confirm that the remains of this (underframe and steelwork, but wooden body long gone) are still present at North Acton Jct. Foliage slowly consuming the view though.

Only sure reliable location for viewing is the A40 footpath overbridge as noted previously.

  • 10 March 2020 - Kev Adlam

    Still in situ

Seen from Branch Line Society charter train today that reversed in Park Royal Sidinga

  • 30 October 2020 - Ben Williams

VCT has apparently been updated to suggest this has finally been removed? Anyone able to confirm please?
