Probably safe to assume this won't be returning to the main line again....

When did this coach meet its fate? I believe i saw this in this condition in about 1998 but may be mistaken. Judging by the small bush growing out of it though i may not be far wrong. I stand to be corrected.

I *think* this is still here but with the depot closed it surely can't last much longer?! Any updated sightings welcome, thanks.

    17 October 2008 - Andy Dickinson

I was in Milton Keynes yesterday (16th) and on my way back to Bedford, it was no problem to divert off the route back home and go past this site to see if 977618 was still there. I can confirm it was still present up against the stop block - the rusty end panel and gangway connector being easily observed.

977618 can be easily viewed from a car and the best view is obtained when travelling south on V7 Saxon Street. The rail overbridge is between Denbigh and Princes Way roundabouts and the vehicle is on the west side of the road and the north side of the bridge. It can also be viewed from a passing train on the Bletchley - Bedford line. There is no road access to the siding so 977618 would have to be moved elsewhere in the area for disposal - a possibility being into the Depot itself now that is has closed.

Other vehicles were on site some years ago including GUV 93723 and an LMS tube wagon. It is highly likely they are still there. 977618 was set on fire on 05 August 1998 - this information was obtained from Milton Keynes Fire & Rescue Service in about 2000/01 when the info would still be on their system. From the date, it seems very much like bored schoolkids - how many other vehicles have met their end in this manner?

More familiar to people as the burnt out rusty wreck that now sits at Bletchley, I'm not sure if this ever received its 977 series number? From a comment under the other photo, it was burnt out on 5th Aug 1998.

    3 December 2009 - Daniel

Hello, Dose anyone know if 977618 is at Bletchley, Would like to photograph.

  • 977618

    4 December 2009 - anon

Yes, coach is still in the headshunt of the "cambridge sidings" (i.e. not part of the closed TMD complex) it can be viewed by catching a train from Bletchley to Fenny Stratford (one stop) or it can be viewed from the footpath next to "TESCO Extra" the path runs from Saxon Street (B&Q roundabout) going towards Bletchley B4034 just above the railway bridge.

Please do not contemplate trespassing in order to gain a photgraph though. This site does not condone trespass; all photographs taken on railway property / trackside have been done so with permission and the required safety precautions.

    17 April 2010 - Dan Adkins

This is still here as of 12th April, however, the trees have grown a fair bit and this and 93723 and the wagon are rapidly becoming somewhat buried, I doubt they'd be able to be extracted easily so will still be there for a fair while.

Here's an idle thought, (you can tell I've not been getting out much this year).

For those of us who like to do a bit of underlining, do you think this one would count, seeing as nothing that went to constitute it's departmental livery/identity now remains.

I love rust-pics, but do like a bit of identity to remain.

I'd say that what ever TOPS or GEMINI say it is, then it is. Not all departmentals even gained there "official" number, so this one not carrying it's number because it's been burned off or rusted away doesn't really constitute it no longer existing, or even reverting to a previous guise.

    26 February 2011 - Jim Coates

from what i remember of the coach it never received it's departmental number and was stored at the end of a siding that was known as "The Cambridge Sidings" with GUV 93723 i moved to north wales in 97 and it had never moved from it's spot for years i hope this helps in anyway

  • 977618

    29 September 2012 - Ben Williams

VCT suggests this is now scrapped. Anyone confirm please?

  • 977618

    30 September 2012 - Michael Winter

    it is still there.

  • 1 December 2012 - Paul Cheesemore

Can confirm its still in its current location - went by it twice today

  • 11 May 2016 - Ben Williams

    Is this still here?

  • 977618

    3 February 2017 - Vincent bailey

Saw this on the 03/02/17 along with GUV 93723.

  • 26 April 2017 - Robin Morel

Land being cleared of trees and pointwork oiled ahead of this vehicle in the former Bletchley 'Cambridge' group sidings. a move possibly in relation to removing this and a GUV vehicle and wagon still here

  • 1 May 2017 - Ben Williams

Thanks Robin please keep us posted if possible. An updated sighting would also be useful as we don't have anything since 2015.

  • 24 August 2019 - Paul Cheesemore

This coach is now well hidden in the trees as you head towards Bedford on the train

  • 9 February 2020 - Greg Hartle

Hoping to catch a glimpse of this and the GUV 93723 in a couple of weeks! Let's hope nature is kind to me and it's more branches rather than leaves in the way!

  • 977618

    20 December 2021 - Ben Williams

This, the GUV and tube wagon are finally being offered for sale on latest Network Rail tender. Suspect this one only good for scrap but the GUV may have salvageable parts...

  • 11 May 2022 - Ben Williams

I'm told that scrapping of the three vehicles here finally started on Monday with bodywork removed by the end of that day. Expect most has now gone.

  • 11 May 2022 - John Hall

Hello Ben is there any knowledge as to who the contractor is at all please?

  • 13 May 2022 - Ben Williams

Hello John - you will have now seen the email and photos. The grab had Network Rail logos on it but Peter Hall seems to think it is unlikely to have been done by them?
