Can anyone help put a mystery to rest? A while ago I was given some spotting notes from Brian Rolley covering the Cardiff area in the early 70's. On the 30/6/71 Brian noted 07191, 07192, 07193, 07194 and W139W passing through Cardiff General, possibly being hauled by D1958. Now I know W139W is the track recording vehicle shown above, but neither Brian nor myself have any clue what 07191-4 are. Any ideas?

My best guess is that they were dedicated brake force runners to allow this vehicle to be used at higher speeds, but searches have turned up nothing. The glimpse of what appears to be an overall blue Mk.1 makes me wonder if these could be one of the aforementioned numbers but that's nothing but a guess.

    Many thanks.

Sorry Steve, I can't help you with your question but seeing DW139 again brought back an unpleasant memory!!

When I was in London Transport's Permanent Way Design Office, we had two Hallade clockwork machines (one had 'London Electric Railways Enregisteur Hallade' on the handle) and both machines were annually calibrated using DW139 on the move. I travelled in that poor thing from Paddington to Bristol and back being shaken around and deafened in that beast at around 100mph!!! An experience that is best forgotten!!!
