Its a possibility this wagon may be lurking inside the old Pullman sheds but this isn't confirmed. We *may* know this year once it is finally cleared although it is proving a tricky task to complete!

This is a very interesting wagon, as it appears to be one of the 5000 GWR diagram N32 Minerals built from 1933 for redemption hire. They had various builders and were painted in the private ownership liveries. If it does still survive it would be an important historical artefact very worthy of preservation.

I saw an old mineral wagon (loaded with rotten sleepers) outside the Preston Park Pullman Sheds on 9/7/94 although i can't confirm if it was this one or not. The only other wagon visible outside the former Pullman Sheds on this date was a four-plank dropside open (loaded with machinery) which was presumably 'preserved' stock, so the mineral wagon may have belonged to them as well. All will be revealed in due course.

It's one of the GWR high capacity coal wagons that were available on hire to the bigger collieries. There is another of this type preserved at Didcot. After Nationalisation, it was renumbered in the BR ex-Private Owner series as P 45099. It was later based at Lover's Walk depot Brighton and was used store traction sand and lettered "M&Es (RSE) Section Brighton". The IU number was issued on 5-5-73.

Does anyone know what liveries this wagon would have carried in its career? This will help the Glos-Warks Railway, as I believe they want to restore this wagon in the near future.

Dear Phil,
It's not my wagon, but if it was (I wish!) then BR early freight grey and lettering as P 45099 would do it for me. There are plenty of wagons preserved already in GWR livery, but none (as far as I know) finished in the late 40's/early 50's ex-Private Owner condition with a "P" number prefix.

The former GWR running number is unknown to me, but the early BR ex-Private Owner number was P 45099, GWR diagram number N32.
When photographed, the livery was a glossy "Engineers olive green" and well looked after.

This wagon would never of had GWR livery. It was built by an outside maker for the GWR who redemption hired them to mainly welsh collierys eg Crumlin Valley Coll., Cilely, PJ &JP, SC, Glanhafod. A full list can be found on page 249 of GWR Goods Wagons by Atkins, Beard & Tourret 3rd edition.

It was painted olive green when at Brighton. I photographed it at an open day. It was also being used on that day as a load for the Brighton crane demonstration.
In GWR days it would have been painted in the livery of the company that was purchasing it on redemption hire - not in GWR livery.

The BR P numbers were, I believe, allocated at random (as wagons were repainted) so will not help identify it.
According to "GWR Wagons" it ought to have a plate on the solebar with a number H1001 - H6000. This would allow you to identify the company who owned it from the table on page 249 of the book.
